Cornwall hunting another big win in daCosta Cup

WHEN the round of 16 of the ISSA daCosta Cup competition begins today, former champions Cornwall College will be seeking a winning start when they host Maldon High at 3 p.m.

Cornwall, the Group 1 winners, humiliated Cedric Titus High 13-1 to secure their spot and will be looking to ride that momentum and make things challenging for Maldon, the Group 4 runners-up.

Still licking the wounds from a 7-1 whipping by St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) on Saturday, Maldon will try to heal themselves and seek to upset the former champions after creating history by making it to the round of 16 for the first time ever.

They will need their leading goalscorer Javaughn Anglin to be in his best form and lead his team to win against the tough Cornwall team.

When both teams met earlier this season, Cornwall dominated Maldon winning 1-0 and 4-1.

In St Elizabeth, defending Ben Francis KO champions, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) will be in a must-see matchup against 'giant killers' Kemps Hill High at STETHS Sports Complex at 3 p.m.

STETHS, the Group 4 winners who outclassed their opponents in the round of 32, will look to start off on a positive note. The Omar 'Rambo' Wedderburn-coached team has finally found their footing and is showing up at the right time in the competition.

Kemps Hill, the Group 1 runners-up who edged out Frome Technical with a 2-0 win, are on the hunt to cut down STETHS.

Though it will be a tough task, Kiegon Mitchell, second-year head coach of Kemps Hill, said team is ready for the challenge.

"We are up to the task and expect a win. But it is difficult to beat STETHS at home. If we don't win, the next best thing is to share the points in a draw," said Mitchell.

The Clarendon-based Kemps Hill has been described as a surprise package for the past two seasons. This season they clipped favourites Glenmuir High and defending champions Garvey Maceo in the first round.

Mitchell mentioned that the team is currently in recovery mode after their rescheduled match on Monday.

"The STETHS team played Saturday, so they had days to rest but we weren't that fortunate because our game was on Monday. We only had Tuesday to get a little rest," Mitchell said, noting the match was put off owing to a waterlogged field.

"We will be travelling with those tired legs," added Mitchell.

Meanwhile in St Catherine, Dinthill Technical High, the Group 6 winners, will host Group 3 runners-up, The Manning's School at 3 p.m.
