A man who was shot and injured during a reported confrontation with the police in Caymanas Bay, Central Village, has died in hospital.

He has been identified as 24-year-old Rushawn "Russian" Gayle, a labourer of Caymanas Bay, St Catherine.

Reports are that about 5:35 a.m. on Monday, October 21, police operatives carried out a targeted operation in the area.

During the operation, Gayle was reportedly accosted when he brandished a firearm and opened fire at the police. The lawmen returned fire, and Gayle was shot and injured.

A Ruger Hi-Point 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing six rounds of ammunition was seized.

Gayle was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was admitted, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the incident.
